Merlympics: Could Mermaiding Become an Olympic Sport?
What if mermaiding could become a real Olympic sport? 🌊🧜‍♀️ In this exclusive interview, MerMapp CEO Corinna chats with Andrea, the heart behind the Merlympics, to explore how this growing international competition is setting new standards in the mermaiding world. From speed challenges to performance showcases—and the world’s first dedicated category for disabled mers—this event is building something big, inclusive, and truly groundbreaking.

Let me tell you a secret: there’s something magical about watching a mermaid glide through the water—not just in photoshoots or dreamy performances, but in full-on athletic competition. That’s what the MerLympics - that this year are going to take place on the 24th of May in Wolfsburg / Germany - are all about. And when I sat down with Andrea, the powerhouse behind this growing global movement and founder of Mermaids Wolfsburg, I knew I wasn’t just talking to a CEO—I was talking to a visionary shaping the future of mermaiding itself.
Let’s dive in, shall we?
Not Your Average Mermaid Convention
If you’ve ever been to a mermaid festival, you know the joy of dressing up, meeting fellow mers, and soaking in the community vibes. But the MerLympics? This takes things to another depth.
This is not just a gathering. This is a structured, rule-based, international competition with clear regulations, skill categories, and a vision that takes inspiration of the Olympic-level organization. While most mer-events focus on connection and expression (which we love, too!), the MerLympics put athleticism, growth, and global standards center stage.
In fact, Andrea dreams of someday seeing mermaiding acknowledged in larger sports federations—and who knows? With this kind of foundation, we might just swim our way into the real Olympics someday.
A Glimpse Into the Categories:
Speed Challenge – 50 meters of mermaid-powered racing!
Underwater Rescue Drill – Swim, dive, save your teammate, and get them back to safety.
Best Underwater Picture – It’s all about that form, pose, and bubble control!
The Performance Category – Mers choreograph their own routine with required skills woven in.
The Ralley – One fin off, swim to safety... because even mermaids need to improvise.
MerLympics With Heart đź’™
But what moved me most? The heart behind it all.
Andrea isn’t building this just for pros or picture-perfect swimmers. She’s building this for everyone.
That’s why the MerLympics is the first mermaid competition I’ve ever seen that has a dedicated category for athletes with disabilities. The “Specials” category is specifically designed to make space for mers who want to be seen and celebrated—no matter what body they swim in.
Why does this matter? Because mermaiding is powerful. It’s healing. The monofin brings a new kind of freedom, especially for people whose bodies may be limited in other ways. And Andrea gets that.
“Swimming in a monofin, navigating the water, and understanding one’s own abilities—this alone is an incredible achievement that deserves recognition and respect.”
It’s not just inclusive. It’s revolutionary.
Building a Global Pod, One Splash at a Time
Andrea has a big dream: one day, every country will host its own national MerLympics, and every two years, the top athletes will gather for an international showcase of fin-tastic skill. The vibe? Less Olympic pressure, more aquatic joy.
And here’s the thing—you don’t have to be a pro. Whether you’re shy, curious, or brand new to the sport, the MerLympics welcomes everyone. You can swim, cheer, dance, or just soak it all in from the sidelines. There’s even an After Show Party (yes, with all the sparkle you’d expect), where you can meet your mer-idols and make new friends.
Behind the Scenes: Our Take on Why This Matters
Still wondering if it’s for you?
Let Andrea's words be your answer:
"The MerLympics are open to everyone. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about showing up and having fun."
And honestly? That’s what mermaiding is all about. Come for the sport. Stay for the memories. Leave with friends, a full heart, and maybe even a sparkly medal.
So, whether you’re looking to race, perform, or just float alongside the magic—the MerLympics are waiting for you and it’s just around the corner! If you’re in Wolfsburg / Germany around May, make sure to check it out!
With fins & friendship,

Final Splash: Why You Should Dive In
Andrea’s journey with the MerLympics started in 2013, under the mentorship of Normeth Preglo Parzhuber from the IMSIA (International Mermaid Swimming Instructors Association). The moment they crossed tails in Boracay / Philippines, Andrea knew this wasn’t just a certification—it was the beginning of something bigger.
In 2015, the first MerLympics took place in Germany. From there, the event rippled outward—spreading to England, Switzerland, and now welcoming athletes from the USA, Spain, France, and even Iran. Mermaids and mermen from around the world, uniting through sport, water, and community? That’s the kind of global energy we need.
How It All Began: From Boracay to the Big Leagues

At MerMapp, our mission is to unite merfolk everywhere through one easy platform. We’re not just building an app—we’re creating a movement. And events like the MerLympics are what give that mission heart.
That’s why we are proud to be sponsoring the MerLympics this year - and sad at the same time as we won’t be able to physically be there as we’ll still be on our Asia tour to bring the other side of the globe into the app to make this a truly global community.
