When I first heard whispers about a mermaid festival happening in the Philippines, I knew I had to dive in and learn more. As the CEO of MerMapp, it’s my passion (and honestly, my full-time obsession) to support merfolk communities around the world—especially when they’re doing something as bold and beautiful as launching their very first Merfolks Festival.

So, I had the joy of sitting down with the ever-radiant Amarie, the heart behind this event, to hear how this magical moment came to life. What followed was a conversation full of sparkle, seafoam, and serious inspiration.

The Untold Origins of Filipino Mermaiding

Here’s something many people don’t realize: the Philippines already had its own wave of mermaid schools before the hashtag #merlife ever trended on TikTok.

“In 2017, we formed a community-based organization where people could come together to share resources, swim, and celebrate our love for the ocean,” Amarie explains.

But what really makes this scene special?

“We don’t define being a mermaid by simply wearing a tail. We welcome everyone: all ages, all genders, from curious beginners to seasoned professionals—even those who are still saving up for their first swim.”

It’s this radical inclusivity that makes the Philippines merfolk scene so powerful. Whether you’re already flipping in silicone or still watching from the shore, you belong here.

“When I was just starting out,” Amarie shares, “I would see mermaid conventions in the US and be amazed at how they brought the community together. It’s always been a dream to have something like that here in the Philippines—and now, we're making it happen.”

“The Philippines Merfolks Festival is a two-day celebration of Filipino strength, artistry, and ocean spirit,” Amarie tells me.

There will be stunning mermaid performances, conservation talks (hello, ocean guardians!), and—drumroll please—the very first Philippines Merfolks Championship.

Yep, that means artistry, skill, storytelling, and tail-whipping fun in a showcase like no other. And someone’s going home with the coveted Grand Champion Award.

Amarie had a beautiful plan to honor some of the original mermaids from the Philippines—those who paved the way before tail culture was trendy. Although scheduling kept them from joining in person, that tribute is still happening. And it matters.

Just knowing that this history exists—and is being celebrated—anchors the festival in something deeper than sparkles and scales. It’s about roots. Legacy. Community.

When: 2nd-3rd of August 2025
Where: Baliaug, Bulacan / Philippines
Entrance Fee? Nope - you're free to join and enjoy! But bring some cash as there will be cool things to buy
Registration: For participants of the competition, it's 2500 Php which includes food, overnight accomodation and event giveaways!
